Centaur: A Clinical Trial
(Part of Living Poem)
Sodium phenylbutyrate, a.k.a., PB:
People with urine disorders take it
Because it removes a nitrogen surfeit.
In people with cystic fibrosis,
It relaxes a folded protein to permit
Intra-cellular chloride transit,
The failure of which causes conniptions.
It apparently alters gene transcriptions
To hinder latent tumor growth
Or an ALS-causing bad gene splice.
Its myriad apps add further apocrypha.
It combats depression in stressed-out mice!
It’s linked to longer lifespans in Drosophila
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid, a.k.a. TUDCA
Is a bile product manufactured in the liver;
And has, in rats, counteracted the curse
Of glutamate clog and neuron death.
PB and TUDCA combined:
Put them together and what have you got?
AMX0035, a.k.a, “Centaur,”
A pill that fills the chill-the-kill bill.
Centaur’s a brand for a hybrid, of course,
But as I have suffered loss of muscle force
I feel like a stud atop a lame horse.
Giddy-up, bibbity. I’ll not say boo.
