Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

Writers at Home: Readings from Young Adult Fiction Writers

The Writers at Home spring series continues with readings by young adult fiction authors Alan Gratz and Monika Schröder. Both authors’ respective novels are historical fiction based on memoirs of World War II. This event is free and open to the public and begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., Asheville.

Gratz will discuss his latest novel, Prisoner B-3087, based on the true story of Jack Gruener, who as a boy survived 10 different Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Gratz is the author of a number of young adult novels, including Samurai Shortstop (Dial Books, 2006), which was selected as one of the American Library Association’s 2007 Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults, Something Rotten (Dial Books, 2007), an American Library Association 2008 Quick Pick for Young Adult Readers, and The Brooklyn Nine(Dial Books, 2009), one of Booklist's 2010 Top Ten Sports Books and Top Ten Historical Books for Youth.

Schröder, a German writer, will discuss her novel, The Dog in the Wood, which grew out of her father’s experiences at the end of World War II.  She is the author of three novels for young readers, including Saraswati’s Way (Farrar, 2010), which won the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Crystal Kite Award, and My Brother’s Shadow (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2011) which is a nominee for the 2014 New York State Reading Association's Charlotte Award.

The Writers at Home Series is sponsored by UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing Program. For more information, visit agc.unca.edu/great-smokies-writing-program or call 828.250.2353.
