The Western North Carolina Historical Association has organized a day of architectural exploration in which participants will visit and learn about the greatest buildings by the renowned architect, Richard Sharp Smith. An England native, Smith moved to Asheville after being named the supervising architect of the Biltmore House in 1889. Because of his work on the Biltmore House as well as other work through his private practice, he has become one of the most well known and respected architects of his time.
John Turk, historian for WNCHA and the Smith McDowell House Museum will guide this one-day tour through Asheville, Montreat, Hot Springs, and Marshall as viewers discover some of the most beautiful buildings in Western North Carolina. The buildings that will be visited (some only from the outside) will include the Masonic Temple in Asheville, the Anderson Auditorium in Montreat and the Dorland Memorial Presbyterian Church in Hot Springs.
For WNCHA members, the trip will cost $40.00 per person and for non-members, the price will be $55.00. The fee includes a boxed lunch.
