Armchair meets bucket seat in Sakowski's tourist's treasury
Carolyn Sakowski’s Touring the Western North Carolina Backroads offers 21 tours that dwell more on history and lore than on best eats and admission fees.
Now Sakowski is on a book tour of fifteen WNC locations, covering much of the 4,000 miles of road she had had to travel to do the update.
The last tour in the book is “The New River Tour.” You learn how to get the best view of America’s oldest river. And then you hop—with good directions—from one story-inspiring place to another, some of which have preserved landmarks.
Past the rock climbers at Stone Mountain, you proceed to a waterfall at Widows Creek, and then to Roaring River Baptist Church, where you’ll find the farmhouse of Eng and Chang Bunker.
Relying on fact rather than folklore, Sakowski tells the tale of the famous Siamese twins, each of whom had a wife and many children; how they survived an interpersonal but not physical split; and how they died.
Part of Sakowski’s update involves reportage of damage and preservation at sites.
“I have to gush about the Cherohala Skyway,” Sakowski says about the new Robbinsville area scenic byway with views of two national forests.
However, along the South Fork of the New River, where the river “is frequently only a few feet from the road…so close that you’ll almost feel you’re canoeing the river,” new homes have been built overlooking the river, making the drive less “bucolic.”
