Too much social networking?

Hi readers and writers:

How much is the right amount of social networking?
I have a website www.hikertohiker.com and a blog on that website,
www.hikertohiker.com/thishikinglife
I just signed up for Facebook. I realize that most of you have been on Facebook for
a while.
Now I read about this conference on social networking

SIBA (Southern Independent Booksellers Association) encourages southern writers to sign in
and it helps in connecting independent bookstores with writers that may want to do a book event.

So what are you doing and how much is it helping?
Do you think it's taking away from your writing or is it productive?

Hi Danny:

The Creative Penn has had some interesting articles recently about social networking and writers. From the research I've done, daily social networking probably doesn't seem helpful unless you are specifically trying to build a high-traffic, paying blog or website because, as you said, you end up spending most of your time on-line rather than writing your core product. But setting up a regular schedule to use social media does help authors build an audience and a brand. -Caralyn
