Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

I always wondered if this house on Oakwood Street in West Asheville was haunted. This photo was taken in about 1938 or 1939. It seems I can see ghostly figures behind me when I look at this photo. I can even see some looking through the window..My grandfather died in this house, and my grandmother died the year before when the family was living in this house.Grandma Sallie died in 1917 and Grandpa Will died in 1918. They were young and had young children living at home. My Dad was 15 when he became orphaned and he was a middle child. The youngest child was my Uncle Bill (who I wrote about on my blog). This all happened years before my siblings and I were born in the mid 1930's.We were very young (my siblings and myself) when we lived in this house, but I remember it. We lived in three houses on Oakwood Street. This one was the first one we lived in. Daddy bought a brick house that was a couple of houses down on the right later on. The house in the photo was a white frame house and it was on the right coming down from Haywood road. We had many imaginary friends when we lived in this house. I mean many and we talked with them all of the time, I wonder now if our imaginary friends were all that imaginary! I never seemed to think there was an evil presence in the house, We accepted the presence or presences that seemed to be there.Maybe all of this happened because our sister was born with a caul over her face. It is an old wives tale that caulbearers have the gift of second sight. On thinking this whole thing over, I was remembering that my mother lived in the family funeral home from the time she was born until she was married. Perhaps she brought these "friends" with her to her marriage. I have always loved ghost stories

If you look closely you can see faces on the trees, and on the tombstone that says "Bell"
or is it my imagination?

I never see these pictures until after the fact. This photo was taken at my great grandfather's gravesite.

Rob I do not know very much about these ghosts..My mom had issues with having been the "undertakers" daughter. I sometimes wondered if these "spirits" followed her around. At any rate, I do not believe our ghosts were aristocrats such as the White Oak Ghosts! Just run-of-the-mill ghosties!
