You've heard of watching the Big Ball drop on New Years Eve-have you heard of watching a Possum drop? Clay Logan, a gentleman down the road from me, has become quite famous for hosting his annual Possum Drop.

The Possum Drop is a huge event-each year it draws a larger crowd than the previous year-last year over 500 attended. However, not all folks are pleased with the event.

Each year Clay receives complaints from people who believe the drop is demeaning and hurtful to the Possum. One animal rights group declared an all out war against the Possum Drop. Our local paper usually has a "letter war" of it's own this time of the year. People voicing their opinion in favor of the drop and people voicing their opinion against the drop.

Last year Pap was in on the catching end of the drop. Pap said the Possum is caught in a live trap (meaning it does no harm to the Possum) a few weeks before the drop. Clay keeps the Possum in a cage-feeding it and taking care of it until the big drop. Actually-it's not a drop-but a lowering. The Possum is placed in a small cage that is lowered to the ground at the appropriate time. The following day-the Possum is turned loose-free to go back to finding it's own food and making it's own choices.

I've never been to the Possum Drop-but I don't think it's detrimental to the Possum. In fact-I can imagine all the Possums hoping and praying they get picked to be Clay's Special Possum-free food and a warm place to stay would have to count for something in the life of a Possum. Or so I think. What thinks you?
