Virginia Foster on Rice at Black Mountain College
"Dan was on a search for the discipline in which he wanted to spend the rest of his life,'' said Virginia Foster, Rice's companion of many years. ``He found painting, and everything in his life had to fit around painting.'' He told friends that artists had to live and breathe their art and exclude all distractions, including family and children. ``Everything else is secondary,'' he said.
