Civil War Novels for Lets Talk about It Discussion at Haywood Library

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT

NOVELS OF THE CIVIL WAR:  AMERICA’S GREATEST CONFLICT

press release from Haywood County Library

Haywood County Friends of the Library selected the Civil War subject to go along with a traveling exhibition.  Kathy Olsen has planned a Barbara Bates Smith performance as well.

Sometimes historical facts alone are not enough to evoke the truth of the past.  Perhaps this is what Walt Whitman meant about the Civil War when he said that “the real war will never get into the book.”  In the novels chosen for this series the novelists use their imaginative powers to recreate the greatest upheaval in our history in a way that touches emotions and senses as well as intellect.

We will begin this series June 6 with 3 week intervals, meeting  in the library auditorium from 4 PM until 6 PM.

AMERICA’S GREATEST CONFLICT:  NOVELS OF THE CIVIL WAR

June 6        The March by E.L. Doctorow

June 27       On the Occasion of My Last Afternoon by Kay Gibbons

July 18        The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara

August 8     Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles

August 22    Lincoln’s Dream by Connie Willis

The books will be available by  May 25 at the Waynesville branch.  Ask for Teresa Glance to sign out a book.  There is no charge for the books.  For more information call or email Linda Arnold at 456-5311 or stanandlinda@charter.net.

Let’s Talk About It is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with the North Carolina Center for the Book, a program of the State Library of North Carolina.
