Chautauqua Alive! Becky Stone Presents Maya Angelou

The Buncombe Chautauqua Committee and Pack Memorial Library will present a pre-Chautauqua special event in Lord Auditorium at Pack Memorial Library at 6:30 Pm on May 24. Renowned storyteller Becky Stone will present “Becoming Maya Angelou.” Ms. Stone will be appearing as Maya Angelou in the opening program of the annual Chautauqua series that begins June 19. On May 24, Ms. Stone will talk about the development of her characterization of Maya Angelou and read selections from her poetry. Maya Angelou, activist, poet, professor, film director and mother, authored more than twenty books. Please note, this is not an “in costume” performance.
Becky Stone graduated from Vassar College with a B.A. in Drama and holds an M.A. from Villanova University. She moved to the area in 1978 and made her first professional appearance as a storyteller at Pack Memorial Library. She has worked as a solo performer, as part of the Thrice-Told storytellers and as an actor with Asheville Community Theatre. This year will mark her fourth appearance at Chautauqua.
