Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

Under the ancient hemlocks in a secret valley high in the hills
All the little creatures came to a great meeting among the rills

A secret lake, its waters a deepest purple hue
Fed by springs falling from cliffs and the clearest mountain dew

Gives magical renewal to the Creator’s hurt children from pain
From senseless human violence and hunter’s depredations again

The bears came first, ponderously padding through in command of all
The ‘coons came next chattering amongst themselves and having a ball

Stealthily the panthers came, their coats so tawny and thick
While the foxes slunk in almost unnoticed which itself was quite a trick

Then the ‘possums scurried in with their dark, beady eyes
The white-stripped skunks came next tails all held high

The rabbits hopped nervously racing from tree-to-tree
Then came the wolves, lords of all to see

The deer shyly pranced to their place by the lake
Followed closely by a great flapping of wings, the birds came late

The great white bear stood and roared the animals to order
And all became quiet even those on the border

“Brothers, we gather here once a year at this sacred place
To remember our heritage and give our ancestors a face

This sacred lake, Atagahi, must forever remain hidden from human eyes
This truth we come today to teach the young ones who follow by and by

This I pledge to you, one and all
The bear clan will protect “Gall place” and stand tall

Will you swear to do the same?
To protect this sacred place of our Creator’s fame”

All the little creatures responded with a resounding yes!
As they filed past the great white bear they promised to do their best

And when the animals are wounded by a hunter’s stroke
They come once more to repair their bodies that are broke

The Creator works his powerful magic on each one
All the little creatures made young and strong when the day is done…
