Dropping Possums

You've heard of watching the Big Ball drop on New Years Eve-have you heard of watching a Possum drop? Clay Logan, a gentleman down the road from me, has become quite famous for hosting his annual Possum Drop.

The Possum Drop is a huge event-each year it draws a larger crowd than the previous year-last year over 500 attended. However, not all folks are pleased with the event.…

Johnny B Goode and Breaking Up Christmas

In the early 1900s, folks living in the mountains of North Carolina lengthened the holiday season by celebrating the 2 weeks following Christmas-they called it Breaking Up Christmas.

Residents in the community would host a series of house parties. Each night the party would be held in a different… Continue

Christmas In Appalachia 1938

My Great Aunt, Hazel Currie, recently shared a Christmas memory with me-an Appalachian Christmas memory.

The first Christmas I can recall clearly was in 1938. We lived in Cherokee County, NC along the Hiawasse River on the Harshaw Farm, where my Poppa was a sharecropper.

I remember Poppa bringing in a pine tree he'd cut in the woods-he'd even found one with pine cones-already…

A White Pine Christmas

At the center of my childhood Christmas memories stands a White Pine. Granny loves Christmas-the decorating, the cooking, the merry making. Growing up, her excitement made Christmas truly special-even though there was never much money.

I was a teenager before I realized you could buy a Christmas tree specially grown and cut. I figured everyone went out in the woods and cut one like we did. Neither did I realize the White Pine is at the… Continue

Songs Of Christmas

Just in time for Christmas-Paul and Pap's first Christmas CD is available NOW! For the past few weeks you've been listening to a few of the songs on the player-the CD has additional songs (you can see the titles below). All music and vocals are performed by Paul and Pap with the exception of The Little Drummer Boy an instrumental performed by Henry Wilson, Pap's baby brother. Henry has been playing guitar-mostly Chet Atkins style-since he was a… Continue

The Green Girls

The Green Girls by Nancy Simpson

A young woman with pale lips

sulks under a Mimosa tree

holding knees close to her breast.

She does not wave at me today

as I drive past. I know why

or think I know, having seen

her sister walking on the road,

head down, tears on her face.

Why have they quarreled?

One is not lovelier than the… Continue

Porkchops and Applesauce In The Mountains

Pork was the primary source of meat for folks in Appalachia up until the 1950s-60s. Most every family had 2 or 3 hogs and usually in late November or early December when the weather had turned off cold the hogs were readied for slaughter.

Pap's father, Wade, was known as a "good hog butcher" around our area. He was called to various homes and farms throughout the hog killing season. For… Continue
