Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

Hollywood Pictures Inc in Fairview

In the 1920's it seemed the whole country was caught up in excitement about films and Hollywood.    Asheville and Western North Carolina were well aware of the hoopla of Hollywood.   In fact, Hollywood (or at least filmmaking) was already beginning to come to Western NC.I recently stumble across an article from the Jun 6 1926 issue of The Asheville Citizen Times which mentions that Hollywood Pictures Inc, was planning to film just south of Asheville, near Fairview.  But....was this really…See More

North Carolina Room at the Pack Library

It's been a long time since I visited the North Carolina Room at the Pack Library in Asheville. But now that I'm writing a book proposal for a book on the Mountain-to-Sea Trail, I went back there.

What treasures! My challenge is that I'm not just writing about Western North Carolina. The  MST goes from the Smokies to the Outer Banks. Material on the Coastal Plains will be difficult to get. But there are reference librarians eager to…

Collins, CO, and her present day book "Shine" is set in Transylvania County.  This YA book deals with poverty, effects of drug misuse, a hate…

Cries lost on the wind

My book is late. It's a long, sad story, but it will be available at http://www.murderasacalltolove.com soon. Actually the website is up and running, and I'm blogging there. In the meantime, on this rainy morning, found this haiku buried in one of my husband, Philip's emails. He is so talented, and this is exactly how I feel this today:

Still ochred oak leaves

Late autumn so persistent

Cries lost on the…
