Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

Hollywood Pictures Inc in Fairview

In the 1920's it seemed the whole country was caught up in excitement about films and Hollywood.    Asheville and Western North Carolina were well aware of the hoopla of Hollywood.   In fact, Hollywood (or at least filmmaking) was already beginning to come to Western NC.I recently stumble across an article from the Jun 6 1926 issue of The Asheville Citizen Times which mentions that Hollywood Pictures Inc, was planning to film just south of Asheville, near Fairview.  But....was this really…See More

A Good Cause

A roomful of people,

All there for a good cause.

Tickets sold for a fundraising supper;

Proceeds to neuter homeless dogs and cats.

Singer-song writer crooning in a corner;

Cheery groups talking animatedly at tables.

Fraternity boys serve drinks and food;

Your choice tonight, meat or vegetarian.

Are we being smug and…

North Shore Road Controversy is Settled.

Sometimes you don't just read history - you're in it. And that's what happened Saturday Feb. 6.

It promised to be the biggest event in Western North Carolina in 67 years. The North Shore Road controversy in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was over. Swain County was going to get its $52 million over 10 years -an amount that was calculated as the present value of the road that was flooded in 1943 to create Fontana Lake and Fontana Dam.

It's a long saga…

A Simple Sign, By Renea Winchester

Looking back it seems so easy; befriend a stranger…change your life. That’s how true change begins you know, when you step outside yourself and reach out to another never once expecting anything in return.

Many of us want a better job, more money, a nicer home. I didn’t want any of that; I wanted peace. Somewhere along my life-path, I had sectioned each day into compartmentalized appointments. Each morning I awoke, gathered the “To-do” list I had written down the night before,…

Terrifying

Record snowfall, second of the season;

Winter world, everything white.

Lines of vehicles stalled in the drifts;

Others like me slip-sliding along.

Terrifying long, long minutes;

Unsure if I will make home safe and sound.

Staring at the blowing snow;

Thinking of…

Wonderful Dream

Sitting in another business meeting,

Daydreaming about things I want to do with you.

Last night I couldn’t kiss you enough,

Cross-eyed crazy in your embrace.

What would it be like to be with you,

From here on out to the end of time?

To wake each morning—look into your eyes,…

In the Fields

In the fields lives my loneliness,
Out in the fields in the middle of nowhere.
Totally naked I hide in the grass,
Shivering in the emotional cold.
Staring out to where the people are,
Not interested in what they say or do.
Since you’re gone I’m filled with loneliness,
Not caring whether I live or die.

Secret Graces Trailer Done and posted!

I did it - I made the trailer and it wasn't difficult at all. It's all in fun and I had a good time doing it.

Cover to Secret Graces . . . Trailer

The cover for Secret Graces is so very different from Tender Graces! Vivid and full of color and hidden things (just like in Micah's paintings). Can't wait to get go ahead to show it.

And I made my own trailer! It wasn't difficult - it may not be a fancy shiny "Professional" trailer, but I'm proud of it. Who knows if trailers help "sell books" - but, I still enjoyed the process. Will link it here soon!
