Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

Reading Preference:
I spend a lot of time reading children's books, as that is my business, but I can't blame it all on work. A good book is a good book, regardless. I enjoy books that give me a fresh perspective, make me care about the characters, or just yank me out of my everyday life. I am not a huge fan of fantasy, but if the writing is strong and I care about the characters, I can be won over. I read mostly fiction. The non-fiction I read tends to be business oriented or personal essays or memoir. In the store we stock books that will have lasting appeal--classics and future classics.
Favorites:
Kevin Henkes, J.K Rowling, Madeleine L'Engle, Kerry Madden, Allan Wolf, Jon. J. Muth, Robert McCloskey, Hope Larson...

Authors and Illustrators Read for Indies First on May 17th

Last fall Sherman Alexie launched the Indies First movement and encouraged authors to support their local indies by handselling books on Small Business Saturday. Now as part of the celebration of the 95th annual Children's Book Week (May 12–18), the Children's Book Council, Every Child a Reader (the organization that runs CBW), and the American Booksellers Association are launching an Indies First Storytime Day on Saturday, May 17.

Local and regional authors and illustrators…

Wordless Picture Books

I have been extremely happy to help a couple of different customers in the last few weeks who have come in to the bookshop specifically looking for wordless picture books. Why so happy? Because over the last eight years I have generally found that wordless picture books, no matter how visually stunning, hilarious or touching or award-winning, can be a really tough sell.

And that's a shame.

Now, I should be quick to point out that there is no lack of interest in these books on…
