My grandmother is not shown in this photo..I think it must have been in the 1800's some time because
I have a photo of Rebecca where she is very chubby and her hair is very white. My grandmother was born in
1870 and I believe that Mary Jane Elizabeth Rogers Hooper was born in 1880..(she would have been the baby)

There was a series of articles published in the Asheville Citizen in the 70's or maybe the 60's . I was able to look at a couple of these articles when I visited the Hunter Library at WCU in Cullowhee. I found two articles that mentioned my grandfather Will Miller, and even my great grandmother Margaret (Keener) Miller. The staff at the Hunter Library were unbelievably helpful. Wish I could have stayed longer.

M Huggins said… - John Ehle has so many great books. Yes two were made into movies. My husband has know him a long time and we are big fans of his. John is a great writer and has done so much for NC. We just joined the Read on WNC as we did not know it was out there. I just re-read Last One Home again after many years, some great characters. My husband has a novel coming out next year (set in Hot Springs NC in 1917) and John was very helpful. We both grew up near Asheville so are thrilled to have this contact for the literary world there.

Chivous Omar Bradley said… - If I am related to the General, it is very distant and I've not proven the connection. My dad served in WW II and drove the General's Jeep on several occasions. After surviving action at Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and Huertgen Forest, Dad was hit by shrapnel while on a routine reconnaissance mission. After surgery in a field hospital in Germany, he was transferred to a hospital in Brittain where General Bradley visited him. Dad was so impressed by that act that he named me for General Bradley. Nelson Bradley was actually named for Morgan L. Neilson, MD- an early Buncombe County physician. While his given name is listed as Neilson or Nelson M. Bradley on Census records, his name at birth was Doctor Morgan Neilson Bradley. According to my great uncle, he always went by "Nelson" Bradley.

It is a pleasure reading your comments. We share some common ancestry and history. My great great grandfather Alexander Bradley married Elizabeth Goldsmith, the sister of your William Goldsmith. There is some speculation that Alexander's brother Johnathan was a victim of the Shelton Laurel Massacre. He was returning home at the time from Tennessee and disappeared. One of his shoes was found later but neither he nor his body was ever located. Wilma Dykeman, one of the great historical writers of western North Carolina and Tennessee, was a descendant of Alexander Bradley and Elizabeth Goldsmith. Her historical novel, "The Tall Woman" is about her Bradley, Ballard, and Cole ancestors.

- It is actually my Grandmother, Delores Campbell whose Great Great Grandfather was John Goldsmith, and you are right! John Turner Goldsmith did Mary Naomi Corn! I have been trying to do my Grandma's genealogy for her, and her aunt Sammie. Sammie lives in California , as well as my Grandma. I did a google search and saw your story and could not believe it! I was very blessed to have a lady in Missouri helping me with records that I needed on my Sams line and now, since publishing my first book, people who have bought it have gotten in touch with me with old family photos, bible records and all kinds of goodies! With their permission, I am doing a revised edition to add the things that have been shared. So, I am always willing to help those who live out of state with Buncombe County look-ups.

Was reading through posts this evening and noticed your on the Buckner and Freeman families and I also have those in my lines. My 6th great grandfather was Jesse Buckner who married Martha Lee. I descend down through their daughter, Aquilla who married Charles West. I will be glad to send you the info from my Buckner and Freeman databases if you like. I live in Transylvania County, NC and go to Asheville at least once a month to do research there at the library and courthouse and can help you with look-ups.
