Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

Hollywood Pictures Inc in Fairview

In the 1920's it seemed the whole country was caught up in excitement about films and Hollywood.    Asheville and Western North Carolina were well aware of the hoopla of Hollywood.   In fact, Hollywood (or at least filmmaking) was already beginning to come to Western NC.I recently stumble across an article from the Jun 6 1926 issue of The Asheville Citizen Times which mentions that Hollywood Pictures Inc, was planning to film just south of Asheville, near Fairview.  But....was this really…See More

New Rev War novel

My new novel on the American Revolution War is out. "A Passel of Trouble - The Saga of Loyalist Partisan David Fanning." is a fact-based story about one of the most extraordinary characters who fought in the Carolinas.During the first three years of the war, he was captured fourteen times in South Carolina.  He went to North Carolina in late 1780, was commissioned a colonel by the British Army and created havoc in the central part of the state. Among his most notable raids was the attack on…See More

"A Passel of Hate" is Editor's Choice in Historical Novel Review

The review of "A Passel of Hate" from the Historical Novel Review reads in part:"Epley does a thrillingly effective job fleshing out his many characters (there are no one-dimensional heroes—or villains—here), and he lavishes attention on the kinds of real-world details too many historical novelists gloss over—readers will learn as much about trail rations and camp organization as about higher political ideology, and Epley’s undemonstratively evocative prose and tightly controlled narrative keep…See More

South Carolina reenactors like A Passel of Hate

"A Passel of Hate" captured the true essence of the war in the backcountry during the Revolutionary War.  The main character, Jacob Godley, was treat.  "A Passel of Hate" ranks right up there with any of Allen Eckert's or Kenneth Roberts historical novels.  Every arm-chair historian should have "A Passel of Hate" in their library. ---John Moss    Captain, South Carolina Independent RangersSee More
