Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

Happy to join the group...Relatively new to North Carolina. Have published a thriller, Powers Not Delegated, and my second book, The Xerces Factor launches in April 2015. see more at my website: www.rodneypagebooks.com

People seem to buy your book because they like you, and what you stand for. My book is making its way in the world in some of the most wonderful and unexpected ways, but I am not pushing the river -- just letting it all flow, (while of course maximizing our exposure on the social networks!)

For Judith Toy - I agree with you 100% about believing in your project. It also helps to have an encouraging husband, family and an editor (who knows a lot of people). Now I'm working on reaching potential buyers/distributors. It will happen.

Comment by Judith Toy on March 6, 2012 at 10:20am

My husband and I are having so much fun marketing my book. There's a plethora of material online. Hard not to become overwhelmed, but we pick and choose the ideas that suit our project -- and those we can afford. This is a compelling new world. We did a publishing and PR business in the 80's and early 90's, so the marketing techniques are both familiar and unfamiliar (since the information explosion). What has not changed: believing in your project and projecting that belief, bringing it alive for potential buyers/distributors. Patience and persistence are virtues here, too.

Writing is only part of the book business. Marketing is the other 90%. Yes, it's time consuming but you want to get your book in the hands of readers.

I gave a workshop at the NC Writers Network on "Finding your Community". Another way to put it is "Creating your platform." This website is also a good way of doing this.

Donald Marotta,

Are you saying that you do audio recordings?  I am interested in making audio versions of my murder mysteries.  I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Comment by DONALD MAROTTA on October 21, 2011 at 2:37pm

I am sorry to have missed the Burnsville based festival workshops. I wanted to go to make some new friends. I have a list of names to try to contact in nearby counties and will proceed this way.

In the meanwhile, is there anyone interested in audio recordings for any purpose(s)? I can name about 10 good ones and bought a quality mike with Audacity software in place. Anyone one into this?

Asheville-area writers, want to write a new book by spring? See: Kevin McIlvoy's WRITING THE NOVELLA Sessions. Participants will draft a novella between Oct. 2011 and Feb. 2012. The intensive instruction sessions (10 AM to 3 PM) will be Oct. 29, Nov. 19, and Dec. 10. For more info: www.mcthebookmechanic.com
