Small Press challenges
Tomorrow, April 8, I will deliver a talk to a local leadership group on the challenges of running a small press. While there are numerous challenges, my main focus will be on finding readers who love the kind of writing I love. When I founded Press 53 in October of 2005, I made a decision to not follow the markets by publishing the current trends; rather, I decided to publish the kind of writing I love and set out to find readers who agree with me. This way I would never have to edit, re-edit, and edit again books that I don't care for.
Of course the challenge isn't knowing who my readers are, but knowing where they are. So I'll also talk a bit about using our website, Facebook, and forums like this one on The Read on WNC to market globally, and I'll talk about all the events we do locally as well. But key is staying true to publishing work that I love in order to build a loyal following of readers.

I wish I'd known about this! I published with a small press and would be interested to see the point of view of a small press - what SP considers as "success" of an author - what SP likes their authors to do to make them happy - how many book sales is considereed a "success" to a SP ....things like that ...
