“Unveiling Our Treasures” program at Mars Hill College, Feb. 27
On Feburary 27, 3 p.m., Mars Hill College’s Ramsey Center for Regional Studies will present “Pathways in Congregational Song, 1860-1960” as the 2013 “Unveiling Our Treasures” program celebrating the college’s Southern Appalachian Archives.
“Pathways” is focused on shape-note singing, a distinct musical notation that utilizes four or seven sounds noted by uniquely shaped notes for ease of learning. Shape-notes have a rich history in folk and religious singing. More information on shape-note singing and its history can be found at FaSoLa.org.
MHC Music professor Dr. Joel F. Reed and Music student Andrew Hebert will present their research and observations regarding shape-notes gathered from the Southern Appalachian Archives at 3 p.m. in Broyhill Chapel. They will be accompanied by the College Chamber Singers and the Music Department Quartet. Solos will be performed by Andrew Hebert and Carter Benge.
