2012 Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award awarded to Dr. Kathryn Newfont

The 2012 Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award, presented annually by the Western North Carolina Historical Association and Mrs. JoAnn Lipinsky Edwinn, will be awarded to Dr. Kathryn Newfont, associate professor of history at Mars Hill College, for her recent work of non-fiction, “Blue Ridge Commons: Environmental Activism and Forest History in Western North Carolina.”

“Blue Ridge Commons” “tells the story of . . . successful efforts to wed environmentalism with the economic benefit of shared land” over several decades in Western North Carolina, Rob Neufeld states in an article on The Read.

With this award, given to authors from WNC or those who write about the region, Newfont will be joining a long list of influential authors, including Ron Rash, Loyal Jones, John Ehle, and Wilma Dykeman. See past Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award winners.

The award will be presented to Newfont on February 3 at 2 p.m. in the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Site Visitor Center in Asheville. Call 253-9231 for more information.
