Event Description

On Saturday May 7 at 7pm The Liars Bench returns to City Lights Bookstore venue in Sylva with "Planting by the Signs." Special guests and authors, Burnsville residents Jack Pyle and Taylor Reese share traditional planting tales and lore of the Southern Appalachians.

Gary Carden, creator of the Liars Bench and master folklorist and storyteller will entertain and educate with authentic and culturally accurate stories of how mountain people planted their gardens and fields in accordance with the ancient rhythms of the earth. Lloyd Arneach, Cherokee storyteller, entertains with ancient American Indian stories of the “Green Corn Dance” and other spring rituals. Barbara Duncan performs songs from her new CD “Music Says Go.” Steve Brady, a talented dramatist from Macon County, excites audiences with music and storytelling. Paul Iarussi, claw hammer guitar musician soon to be featured on national television, plays ‘old time’ mountain music. Dave Waldrop, The Liars Bench Master of Ceremonies, song writer and singer of songs, and mountain humorist ties this "Planting by the Signs" Liars Bench presentation into something you'll not want to miss.

The Liars Bench creator Dr. Gary Carden said “the Liars Bench is a unique blend of culturally accurate mountain Americana with traditional Southern Appalachian entertainment for all.” Dave Waldrop, The Liars Bench host, said “this show is one you will not want to miss if you want to know how the old timers grew their gardens.”

Regular cast members include Gary Carden, Lloyd Arneach, Paul Iarussi, Barbara Duncan, Dave Waldrop, Steve Brady, and the show’s mascot Bodine. The Liars Bench recognizes established regional artists and performers and encourages new talent also. The Liars Bench has been a crowd pleaser from the very first show in June of 2010 promoting any and all aspects of Appalachian culture.

The Liars Bench was started in the early summer of 2010 by Gary Carden to promote Southern Appalachian storytelling, music, poetry, drama, and folk arts.

Coming in June, a “Smoky Mountain Anniversary.”
