The Coffee with the Poet series continues on Thursday, April 16th at 10:30 a.m. The April gathering will feature Katherine Soniat. She will read selections of poetry from her new chapbook The Goodbye Animals. This collection won the 2014 Turtle Island Quarterly Chapbook Prize Award. Jared Smith, a competition judge said, “The poems encompass our birth from the amniotic fluid of mother and of universe, the animals and plant life that share this ark with us before melting back into the ark as we do, the loves and lives of those we know and are of a part.” Her work has been published in such journals as TriQuarterly, Poetry, Crazyhorse, Gettysburg Review, Antioch Review, New England Review, Kenyon Review, The Nation, New Republic, Georgia Review, and The Southern Review. Sonait loves to travel and the sense of place plays a significant role in her work. The Grand Canyon, the Bavarian Alps, the Andes and Crete are a few areas she has included in her writing. She currently lives in Asheville, North Carolina, and teaches in the Great Smokies Writers' Program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
The Coffee with the Poet series meets every third Thursday of the month and is cosponsored by the Netwest chapter of the North Carolina Writer’s network. For more information on the Coffee with the Poet please call City Lights Bookstore at 828-586-9499.
