The public is invited to a talk by Richard Russell at the Smith-McDowell House in Asheville, Sunday May 29 at 2:00 p.m. Admission will be free to Western North Carolina Historical Association members and $7.00 to non-members. Russell worked with his cousin Karen Clinard to edit and publish three daily journals kept by local resident Cornelia Henry between 1860 and 1868. Fear in North Carolina, The Civil War Journals and Letters of the Henry Family, is a first-hand account of the private lives of non-combatants in the Civil War era. Russell will give a history of the West Asheville Sulphur Springs resort and Henry family, share various journal entries and discuss Cornelia’s comments on family life and other local happenings during wartime. A short question and answer session will follow. Copies of Fear in North Carolina will be available for purchase.
