Flat Rock history via a road

Travelling back in time on a Flat Rock roadby Rob Neufeld             If you walk the one mile length of North Highland Lake Road in Flat Rock, you step nearly 200 years into the past.            At the east end, the 21st century reigns.  Fronting six-lane Spartanburg Highway, a super-Ingles sits above a bog; and a CVS store faces an Octopus Garden smoke shop, a chiropractor, a cell phone provider, and a six-lane avenue to I-26 a mile away .            Neither Ingles nor CVS carries the big…See More

Event Description

"The Liars Bench presents southern Appalachian fright tales at WCUs Mountain Heritage Center.”

Thursday October 18 at 7:00 pm The Liars Bench presents “Appalachian Spook Tales” at WCUs Mountain Heritage Center auditorium. Member Stars Gary Carden, Lloyd Arneach, Paul Iarussi; guest Star storyteller Dot Jackson; and the Tuckaseegee Boys, Ethan Fortner, Russel Messer, and Wyatt Messer perform Southern Appalachian 'scary' in story and song on one stage. Free Admission.

Carden said “I've been a friend of Dot Jackson for forty years and she is one of the most entertaining and knowledgeable storytellers that I know of. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of Southern Appalachian tales—some of which will scare your socks off. This is a going to be a real treat for everyone.”

Regular cast members include Gary Carden, Lloyd Arneach, Paul Iarussi, the Tuckaseegee Boys and the show’s mascot Bodine. The Liars Bench recognizes established regional artists and performers and encourages new talent also.

“The outside world stereotypes us as an ignorant, violent culture, and that's not true. Yet at the same time we've had our share of murder and violence. Sometimes its been quite dark. This Liars Bench won't be a 'funny-face,' jack-o-lantern type of Halloween show. You need to be ready for Southern Appalachian 'scary,'” Carden remarked.

“This is the third Halloween show we've done and I know that the audience will be very impressed with the stories of both Lloyd Arneach and Dot Jackson” said Carden. The Liars Bench, a fusion of culture and entertainment, has been a crowd-pleaser from the very first show in June of 2010 promoting any and all aspects of Appalachian culture.

The next presentation of The Liars Bench at WCUs Mountain Heritage Center will be Thursday November 15 at 7 pm with a special presentation of one of Dr. Carden's plays, “Birdell;” the story of a defiant mountain woman forced off her land by the rising waters of Fontana lake.
